Born in Chester-le-Street, 'Lou' was a speedy and exciting outside-left who had played for Birmingham schoolboys and was on West Bromwich Albion's books as an amateur before conscription to the Royal Navy in 1942. Whilst stationed at Torpoint he was selected to play for the Navy against the Army, RAF and Holland, and came to the attention of Jack Tresadern, who brought him to the club for the transitional Football League South season and eventually signed him on a full-time basis upon demobilization. He went on to make his full Football League debut in the 1946-47 campaign, but the arrival of Bill Strauss saw him lose his place in the team, and after two years at Home Park he moved on to Walsall. He played just 18 times for the West Midlands' side in the 1948-49 season, and then moved south to join Chingford Town before returning to the Midlands to play for Kidderminster Harriers, Nuneaton Borough, Lye Town and Cradley Heath.
