McNeil was a full-back who could play on both the left and right side of defence. He joined Argyle in the summer of 1905 from Hearts and the club handbook of 1905-06 states that he "should prove one of the smartest captures Argyle has made in defence. Knows the game and how to play it. Shows excellent judgement and though he comes from across the border, he is far from the wee laddie. The Three Towns can in a way claim Mac as a son of their own, for his mother is a native of Devonport". Following a single season at Home Park he moved on to Southend United.
