Kearns made a single appearance in goal for Argyle whilst on loan from Oxford United. He had started his career with Oxford and made his debut aged 19 in 1970. He made his international debut for the Republic of Ireland shortly after and went on to win 18 caps. Having lost his place in the Oxford team, he had loan spells with Argyle and Charlton Athletic before transferring to Walsall. He spent six years there, playing nearly 250 games for the club. After three seasons with Wolverhampton Wanderers he returned to Walsall to finish his career.
