Goddard began his career in junior football with Red Rovers and then had a brief spell with Wolverhampton Wanderers before the outbreak of war. Joining Chelsea in 1946 he spent two years at Stamford Bridge, making just 14 appearances before moving to Argyle. He was appointed captain on his arrival at Home Park, but his time at centre-half was disrupted by injury. Finding himself out of the team after less than 18 months, he moved to Exeter City, where he made over 130 appearances in 5 years. Following his retirement from professional football he became player-manager of Bideford.
