Hammersmith-born Byrne was a right winger in the pre-‘wing back’ era. A peripatetic career, which stretched to 17 League clubs across England, Scotland and Ireland, started with Kingstonian in the early 1980s and brought him to the attention of Gillingham for whom he made 23 appearances, scoring three times before moving to Millwall for £5,000 in 1986. Whilst at Millwall, he was loaned to Cambridge United and Blackburn Rovers, making four appearances for each in 1988, before joining Argyle in 1989 on a free transfer. His Home Park debut in March 1989 was the first of 67 appearances for the Pilgrims over three seasons, which also included a loan spell with Bristol Rovers in early 1990.
Leaving Home Park for Watford in late 1991, Byrne's time at Vicarage Road included loan spells with Reading, Fulham and Shamrock Rovers. He then played in Scotland for Partick Thistle and St Johnstone before a brief return to England via a loan spell with Walsall. He then moved to St Mirren before another loan spell saw him make a single appearance for Tottenham Hotspur in the 1995 Intertoto Cup before then playing out his career with Ayr United, Albion Rovers and Armadale Thistle.
Byrne later became a youth team coach at Home Park after a brief spell as a player-coach at Albion Rovers, and also assisted Ian Atkins at Torquay in 2006. He went on to become Director of Football at Plymouth College of Further Education as well as a columnist for the Evening Herald. Moving to Swindon Town in November 2008, he became Youth Team Manager and also Head of Player Development, and briefly Caretaker Manager after Paul Sturrock left to return for his second spell at Argyle.
