Born in Newquay, Matthews played for Newquay Colts before signing for Argyle's academy at the age of 10. He was already a big fan, travelling to home games with his dad, and on one occasion, as a mascot, held Curtis Nelson's hand as the players entered the pitch.
He progressed through the academy, inspired by the likes of Graham Carey, Reuben Lameiras and Sonny Bradley, and developed into a tall central-defender, but he sometimes filled other positions, notably in central midfield, where his comfortable ball-carrying abilities stood him in good stead.
The Cornishman's calmness, maturity and flexibility meant he was included in the senior squad for much of the pre-season build-up in 2023, including at the club's training camp in Marbella, and was a regular that season for Argyle's history-making under-18 side that won both the EFL Youth Alliance South West Division and Merit League One.
Still only a 17-year-old apprentice, he earned his first-team debut in February 2024, albeit as a 119th minute substitute, in Argyle's 4-1 defeat after extra-time by Leeds United in a televised FA Cup fourth round replay at Home Park.
Matthews' dreams came true when his consistent performances earned him his first professional contract in June 2024, at the age of 18. After a brief spell on loan at Tavistock at the start of the 2024-25 season, he headed for Somerset, on another loan deal, to contribute to Taunton Town’s Southern League Premier Division South campaign.
