KAINE KESLER-HAYDEN (aka HAYDEN)
Note: Believed to be for family reasons, Kaine was known as Kaine Kesler in his Academy days, and then Kaine Kesler-Hayden as a professional, but his birth and FA-registered surname is Hayden, with forenames Kaine Kesler.
Born: 23 October 2002
Came from: Aston Villa Went to:
First game: 05 August 2023 Last game: 02 December 2023
Appearances: 20 (17/3) Goals: 0
Born in Birmingham and a wing-back, Kesler-Hayden became a summer signing in June 2023 as Steven Schumacher prepared Argyle for life back in the Championship, joining on a season-long loan from Premier League Aston Villa.
A product of Villa's Academy, he captained their under-18 side to victory in the FA Youth Cup in 2021 and has represented England at under-20 level.
He arrived at Home Park having played once for Villa's under-21s in the Football League Trophy and one game for the senior side, the latter perhaps in unusual circumstances. He was named in Aston Villa's starting line-up for his senior debut on 8 January 2021 in an FA Cup third-round tie against Liverpool, after "a large number of first-team players and staff" tested positive for COVID-19, rendering Villa's first-team squad unavailable for the match. Villa lost 4–1 but were praised for their performance.
Perhaps some retribution was achieved a few months later in May 2021, when he captained the Aston Villa under-18 side which won the FA Youth Cup, beating Liverpool under-18 2–1 in the final. He was then one of several academy players given five-year professional contracts by the club in July 2021.
In August 2021, he signed for Swindon Town on a season-long loan and made his professional league debut five days later, in a 3–1 away victory over Scunthorpe United, in which he won a penalty that led to Swindon's equaliser. He did however, receive his first red card as a professional in his second appearance for Swindon, picking up a second yellow card in a 2–1 defeat to Carlisle United. In December he scored his first professional goal in a 2–1 FA Cup victory over Walsall.
He was recalled from his loan in January 2022 but despite that, for his contribution on loan, he was later named Swindon Town's Young Player of the Season at the club's end of season awards ceremony.
At the end of January 2022, he was sent back out on loan and joined League One promotion contenders MK Dons for the remainder of the season. He went on to make 17 appearances (one goal) for the Dons, helping them to a third-placed play-off finish, clinched with that last day 0-5 win at Home Park which ended Argyle's hope of the same - in which he played the full 90 minutes (as 'Hayden' rather than 'Kesler-Hayden').
In August 2022, he joined Championship club Huddersfield Town on a season-long loan, making 15 appearances (one goal) before being recalled.
At an international level, Kesler-Hayden had been called up to a training camp for the England under-19 national team in November 2020. In September 2021, he made his debut for the England under-20s during a 6–1 victory over Romania under-20s at St. George's Park, Burton.
