Burgoyne was born in Mylor, near Falmouth, in 1887. He joined Argyle in 1910 having previously served with the Royal Navy, for whom he also played in representative matches. A centre-forward, he primarily signed on at Home Park to assist the reserves, but did make one appearance for the first team. He went on to play for Oreston Rovers before emigrating to Australia, where he enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force and served during World War One.
