Born in Edinburgh, Forster was originally a product of Celtic's youth system but at the age of 16 the defender moved east to Hibernian, one of his hometown clubs. In February 2012, still only 18, he was loaned to Berwick Rangers for the remainder of the season, playing ten times and scoring twice. Although he had yet to make his debut for the Hibees, his spell with the English-based Scottish side was enough to earn a new one-year contract at Easter Road in May 2012. He was then loaned out again, this time across the Firth of Forth to East Fife for the first part of the 2012–13 season, for whom he played 12 times.
On return he made his debut for Hibs in a 2–1 win against local rivals Hearts in May 2013 and he also went on to play in the 2013 Scottish Cup Final defeat by Celtic. He then signed a new one-year contract in June 2013 and six months later a further contract to keep him with the Edinburgh club until the end of the 2015-16 season. Overall he clocked up over 50 games in his first two senior seasons with Hibs, including two starts in the Europa League, but a broken foot in October 2014, an appendix operation two months later and ankle ligament damage in May 2015 impaired his progress. A hamstring injury in his first match of the 2015-16 season meant another lay-off and a further drop in the defence's pecking order at Easter Road.
Forster switched one shade of green for another in the January 2016 transfer window when he joined Argyle on a loan deal until the end of the season, so signing for his first (although geographically second) English club. The move meant a reunion with Argyle manager Derek Adams; Forster had been at Easter Road at the same time as Adams, although as assistant manager, Adams would have been very much involved with the first team whilst Forster was in the youth side at that time. Their paths would also have crossed when Forster played four times against Adams' Ross County in the 2013-14 season.
His time at Argyle was relatively effective but he lost his place in the side when he broke his jaw in a collision with an advertising hoarding at Barnet's The Hive in a 1-0 defeat in early March 2016. This was the same match in which Ryan Brunt suffered his cruciate ligament injury with both incidents leading to a remarkable 14 minutes of added time at the end of the first half. Forster did however return to the side at the end of the month and played regularly until the end of the season, his last appearance being as a substitute in the Wembley Play-off Final defeat to AFC Wimbledon.
Forster returned to Easter Road in July 2016, signing a new two-year contract, and helped Hibernian win the 2016–17 Scottish Championship title and promotion back to the Premiership. In total he made 78 appearances and scored six goals for his childhood club, but realising that he was likely to be on the periphery in Scotland's top tier, in July 2017 he returned to League Two by signing a two-year deal with Cheltenham Town.
