Arnason arrived at Argyle on a free transfer after leaving Danish club Aarhus. He began his career at Valur in his hometown of Reykjavik and then spent five years with Vikingur in the same city. Moving to Sweden with Djurgarden, he helped the club win the League and Cup double in 2005. He then spent two years with Aarhus which included a short loan spell at Esbjerg.
An Icelandic international, Arnason was signed on a one-year deal by Argyle after impressing during an extended pre-season trial. Normally a central midfielder, he found a home in the centre of the Argyle defence during his first campaign with the club and soon agreed a two-year extension to his contract. Under Peter Reid he moved back into a midfield position and, despite occasional on-field disciplinary problems, was one of the team's few consistent performers throughout the back-to-back relegation seasons. Arnason's time at Home Park came to an acrimonious end when he was sacked by administrators for refusing to sign a further salary deferral, following months of missing or reduced wage payments.
Shortly afterwards he had a trial with Heart of Midlothian before joining Aberdeen, agreeing a twelve-month contract with a club that has also seen former team-mates Chris Clark, Yoanne Folly, Rory Fallon, Jim Paterson, Steve MacLean and David McNamee on their books. Arnason made 33 appearances and scored three times for the Dons but failed to agree an offer to extend his contract, and in the summer of 2012 joined ambitious League Two side Rotherham United under new manager Steve Evans at the club's newly-built New York Stadium.
Arnason clocked up 130 appearances in a successful three seasons with Rotherham, helping the Millers to back-to-back promotions from League Two to the Championship. In the summer of 2015 he returned to Sweden, his country of birth, to join Malmo, and the following summer he won his 50th cap for Iceland in the 2016 UEFA European Championship, with impressive performances to help his side reach the knock-out stage.
After 44 appearances and two goals for Malmo, Arnason moved on in January 2017 to AC Omonia in Nicosia. The 34-year-old made only eight appearances in six months for the Cypriot First Division side before re-joining Aberdeen in July 2017.
