Born in Zellik in Belgium, Mpenza began his football at K.V.Kortrijk and his impressive displays led to a move to the Belgian top flight with R.E.Mouscron before moving on to Standard Liege in 1997 and then FC Schalke 04 in Germany two years later. A Belgian international who won more than 50 caps, including appearances in the 1998 World Cup and in Euro 2000, he returned to Standard Liege in 2003 before a €2.5 million move to Hamburger SV a year later. In 2006 he made a surprise move to Al Rayyan in Qatar and then joined Manchester City in February 2007. Following his release after 17 months with City, he moved to Home Park on a contract believed to be the most expensive in the club's history. He was often injured during his time at Argyle, scoring just two goals, and was released at the end of his 12-month contract.
Mpenza then joined Swiss side Sion, scoring an impressive 21 goals in just 32 games during the 2009-10 season. Moving on to Azerbaijan, he signed a three-year deal with Neftchi Baku, scoring six goals in 31 games for the club before leaving in January 2012 after losing his place in the side. After a year without a club he signed for Belgian second division side SC Eendracht Aalst in October 2013 at the age of 35.
