Born in Bamburgh, Northumberland in 1886, Wake began his career with local side Newcastle United but did not make an appearance for the first team. In the summer of 1907 he moved to Home Park and the club handbook described him as "full of promise, a well-built youngster, very speedy and reliable and never tires". However, he struggled to break into the side and played only ten games, primarily at left-half, before joining Exeter City in time for the 1908-09 campaign, their first in the Southern League.
