KEITH THOMAS
Full Name: Walter Keith Thomas
Born: 28 July 1929
Came from: Cardiff City Went to: Exeter City
First game: 17 October 1953 Last game: 20 August 1955
Appearances: 37 (37/0) Goals: 8
Thomas started his career with Oswestry Town, his hometown club, before joining Sheffield Wednesday in 1950. A right-winger, he made 10 appearances and scored once for the South Yorkshire side but struggled to make a sustained impact at Hillsborough and moved on to Cardiff City two years later.
At Ninian Park he again failed to break into the first-team for a prolonged period but did score four goals in nine appearances. Moving to Home Park in November 1953 for £4,000, he was identified by manager Jimmy Rae as the successor to Gordon Astall, following his move to Birmingham City. Thomas went on to play the first regular football of his career, but was unable to make the wing position fully his own and after three seasons at Home Park, left to join Exeter City in March 1956. During his time at Home Park, Thomas was a part-time professional, combining football with working as a school teacher - a career combination that he continued to enjoy after his move to St James Park.
After 44 appearances and six goals across the remainder of that season and the next, he left St James Park in the summer of 1957. Deciding against a move to Hereford United, he instead returned to Oswestry Town as their player-manager before taking a similar role with Pwllheli. He later joined the RAF (he was granted a commission based on his teaching qualification) where he served as a Flying Officer and played for the RAF's representative side, whilst working as a fitness trainer in a number of domestic and foreign postings.
In March 2021, Keith Thomas was Argyle's oldest living former player at 91. He passed away in Shrewsbury in October 2021 at the age of 92.
