Few Argyle fans of a certain age will fail to remember the perpetually and distinctively knee-strapped presence of Lindsay Smith at the heart of the defence. Born near Hyde Park Corner in London, he was on Arsenal's books as a schoolboy and also played as a youngster for Enfield. Although he was offered an apprenticeship at Highbury, he decided instead to join the youth setup at Colchester United. In April 1971 he made his first team debut at Colchester at the age of 16 years and 214 days, so becoming the U's youngest-ever player, and went on to score 16 times in over 200 league appearances whilst at Layer Road (also playing one match for Charlton Athletic and five for Millwall in loan spells with the south London rivals in 1976-77). He joined Cambridge United in 1978, where he chalked up another 174 appearances and 7 goals in five seasons, which included another loan spell, this time joining Lincoln City for a month in 1981.
Moving to Home Park in 1982, Smith spent two seasons in green and featured prominently in the run to the FA Cup Semi-Final at Villa Park in the 1983-84 season. After making an impressive total of 59 league and cup appearances in that single season, Smith returned closer to his roots, signing for Millwall for a second spell, permanently this time. Following two seasons at the Den, he returned to Cambridge United for a second time, clocking up another century of appearances across three seasons. His second spell at Cambridge proved to be his last in the Football League, and after amassing an impressive career total of 629 League games and 49 goals, he moved into local non-league football with Suffolk side Bury Town.
