Sanderson played for Cambridge University under Malcolm Allison and followed him to Bath City in 1963. He linked up with his manager again when he moved to Argyle the following year and was a regular in the first team throughout his only season at Home Park. Often criticised by fans, Allison maintained that his tremendous work-rate made him a crucial member of the side. However, when Allison left the club Sanderson was sold to Queens Park Rangers. He made over 100 appearances in four years with The Hoops and helped them win both the Third Division Championship and the League Cup in 1967. He went on to play for Goole Town.
