Plymouth-born Binney was a lethal goal-scorer who banged in 42 goals for Argyle in just 77 games. He was named Argyle's Player of the Year after the 1978–79 season. His early career was spent with Torquay United who had spotted him playing for Launceston, and then Exeter City before Brian Clough signed him for Brighton and Hove Albion in 1974. Binney enjoyed a spell in the United States with St Louis Stars in 1977 and then returned home to join the Greens. His career ended with Hereford United.
