Mendes was a central defender or defensive midfielder who joined Argyle following a trial period, which ended in him signing a contract during the 2005 pre-season tour of Sweden. He started his career in Portugal with Vitoria Guimaraes and represented Portugal at all age levels up to under-21. He also played for CD Aves, Felgueiras, CD Chaves, Strasbourg in France, Uniao Leiria, Sporting Braga, Moreirense and Santa Clara before joining Argyle.
Bobby Williamson signed him after a recommendation from Jose Mourinho, who had managed Mendes at Uniao Leiria. Just six months into his one-year contract he was released after playing only three games for Argyle. After leaving Home Park he had brief spells with New York Red Bulls and US Creteil-Lusitanos in France, before returning to Portugal and playing for Penafiel, CD Aves, Moreirense, Trofense and Gondomar.
