McAnespie was a product of the St Johnstone youth system, spending five years with the club, some of that time under manager Paul Sturrock, before being sold to Fulham. He made just two appearances during his time there and had loan spells with Hearts and Bournemouth before being released. He then spent a few weeks with Argyle at the end of the 2002-03 season in an extended trial period, but was not offered a longer contract by Sturrock. Returning to Scotland to sign for Falkirk, he spent an injury disrupted 18 months with the club before a move back to St Johnstone. He went on to play for Ayr United, Alloa Athletic and Greenock Morton as well as Dumbarton on loan, but his injury problems continued and he was eventually forced to retire.
