Maher joined Argyle from his hometown club Everton, where he regularly starred in reserve team football but made just one first team appearance. An England Schoolboy international, he was a regular on the left-wing during his first two seasons at Home Park. However, after losing his place to Don Hutchins, he was sold to Tranmere Rovers, where he played just twice before finishing his career with Bath City.
