ERNIE MACHIN
Born: 26 April 1944
Came from: Coventry City Went to: Brighton & Hove Albion
First game: 23 December 1972 Last game: 01 May 1974
Appearances: 70 (70/0) Goals: 7
After beginning his career with Lancashire non-league side Nelson, Machin became the first player to be signed by Coventry City manager Jimmy Hill. It was a year before he made his debut, but he went on to spend ten years at the club, making over 280 appearances. This figure would probably have been considerably higher had it not been for long-term knee problems. When Machin moved to Home Park in December 1972 he soon showed his class and intelligence, controlling games from midfield. He was named the Player of the Year in his only full season with the club but, much to the dismay of the fans, requested a transfer and moved to Brighton & Hove Albion. After two years with Brighton he retired from the game and moved into coaching. Despite his short stay at Argyle, he made such an impression that he was named in the Team of the Century in 2004.
