Lean spent two seasons with Argyle after giving up his job as a mechanic to try his luck as a professional. He had previously played for St Austell and the local junior league side Embankment, and also as an amateur for Argyle reserves. A regular in the back four during his first season, he left the club after losing his place the following year and returned to non-league football as player-manager of Saltash United. Lean returned to Home Park as assistant to manager John Hore in 1983.
