Lawless was a schoolteacher playing as an amateur for Worcester City when he took a holiday in the Plymouth area in 1955. After asking for a trial with the club he impressed in two reserve team matches and started the following season as first choice centre-back and captain of the team. However, after a poor start to the season for both player and club, he lost his place and did not play for Argyle again. He went on to spend a season each with Oldham Athletic, Aldershot and Southport, without ever establishing himself as a first-teamer, and ended his career with non-league sides Ton Pentre and Stamford.
