Kite, a former England schoolboy and youth international goalkeeper, began his career as an apprentice with Bristol Rovers. He made nearly 100 appearances for the club and also had a short loan spell with Tottenham Hotspur before moving on to Southampton in 1984. After just a handful of games over the next three seasons, and following a loan spell with Middlesbrough, he joined Gillingham, where he was a first team regular for the next two years. After a short spell with Bournemouth, Kite joined Sheffield United but rarely featured and had loan spells with Mansfield Town, Argyle, Rotherham United, Crewe Alexandra and Stockport County before being allowed to leave for Cardiff City on a free transfer. The final stop of a career that was often disrupted by injury was back in his home town with Bristol City.
