Born in Belfast, Kirkwood joined the club to replace Harry Roberts as Jimmy Rae's partner at full-back, enabling the former to join Bristol Rovers. Spotted by Arsenal when playing for Portadown in the Irish League, Kirkwood moved to England in 1933 and two years later, having not made the breakthrough at Highbury, Robert Jack brought the burly defender to Home Park. He spent six seasons with the Pilgrims and built a reputation as a strong tackler, albeit sometimes with a tempestuous nature. War broke out after three games of his final season but he continued to play for the club in the South West Regional League after the Football League programme was abandoned. He returned to Belfast in 1940 for business reasons and continued to play football, most notably for Linfield, and was selected for an Irish League Representative side later that year.
