James began his career with Gainsborough Trinity, joining Lincoln City in 1988, where he played for two years. Moving on to Leicester City he became a club hero after scoring the goal that saved them from relegation in 1991. Four years later, after more than 100 appearances for Leicester, he joined Hereford United and spent two years with the club before moving to Home Park in August 1996. James was forced to retire due to injury after just a single season in the centre of the Argyle defence.
