Heaney spent an injury-plagued year at Argyle after being released by Dundee United. He started his career as a schoolboy with Arsenal and progressed to the fringe of the first team, making a handful of appearances. He also had loan spells with Hartlepool United and Cambridge United before a transfer to Southampton. His form on the wing for Southampton made him a fans' favourite but he was sold to Manchester City after two and a half seasons. Unable to win a regular place in the first team there he joined Charlton Athletic and Bristol City on loan before being released. After dropping down the divisions to play for Darlington for a year, Heaney was signed by Paul Sturrock at Dundee United. The manager resigned just weeks later, and Heaney rarely played in his 18 months at Tannadice. He was eventually released and re-joined Sturrock at Argyle. A serious knee injury limited his chances at Argyle and after two operations failed to solve the problem, he was forced to retire.
