Born in Kilsyth, the left-half played for Third Lanark in his native Scotland before moving to Charlton Athletic for 28 games in 1925. Moving to Argyle from The Valley the following year, Hardie spent eight seasons at Home Park, with a reputation as a consistent performer, a crisp tackler and a smooth passer of the ball. He left Argyle for Exeter City in 1933, where he finished his Football League career after 18 games, and later played for Truro City.
