Greens on Screen started its life in 1999 before many of the football sites that we are familiar with today, including Plymouth Argyle's own official site. Greens on Screen is dedicated to the sights, sounds and history of Plymouth Argyle Football club. It is owned and run by the Plymouth Argyle Heritage Archive, a charity dedicated to the promotion, preservation, and display of the heritage of our great football club.

The site owes its existence to Steve Dean.Without Steve's dedication and commitment for over 25 years, GoS would not exist and be the valued and loved resource for all football fans that it is today. The site is truly the envy of many clubs, and we owe a huge debt to Steve for his tireless work, and continued support behind the scenes.

Greens on Screen's first page was published in January 1999. Its early purpose was to bring Plymouth Argyle a little closer to those unable to see their team, and whilst it has changed a great deal over the years, its core themes - sights and sounds for Westcountry exiles - still stand. The site was very lucky to take on the content of Trevor Scallan's Semper Viridis in the summer of 2007, and in 2009 launched GoS-DB, a wealth of facts and figures from PAFC's history. A year later, we embarked on a complete history of Argyle, with much-valued contributions from chapter authors. Greens on Screen was taken over by its new custodians, The Argyle Archive, in 2024.

Greens on Screen is an amateur website and proud of it. It is run by a team of volunteers from the Plymouth Argyle Heritage Archive (Argyle Archive). Without the hard work and much-valued contributions of these volunteers, running the site would not be possible. Greens on Screen is self-taught and as a result, a little bit quirky.

Greens on Screen remains advertisement free, which means we are grateful for the generous support of our donors and the work of our volunteers to help keep it free of promotions. Furphy was the son of former manager, player and BBC Radio Devon summariser Ken Furphy and spent almost his entire career in the United States. After brief dalliances with Wealdstone and QPR, the Stockton-on-Tees-born winger moved Stateside at the start of the 1980s, signing for his father's Detroit Express in the North American Soccer League (NASL), the predecessor of the present day Major League Soccer (MLS). Furphy netted 26 times in 65 NASL starts. Being the coach's son worked against him and was responsible for his move to Atlanta Chiefs in 1980, where he stayed for a season before moving to Cleveland Force in the Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL). A four year spell in Cleveland produced an improbable 185 goals from 188 games as well as a brief loan spell back with the now relegated Detroit Express in the Second Division of the American Soccer League (ASL). Furphy returned to the Force before then playing for fellow MISL sides Kansas City Comets, Tacoma Stars and Baltimore Blast. By now a naturalised US citizen, he was recommended to Argyle by his father and signed for Dave Smith's side, playing six league matches and scoring his solitary English league goal with a wonderful strike in a 6-1 home drubbing of Huddersfield in August 1987. After his short spell with Argyle, Furphy briefly spent time with Bath City before returning to the States for a spell with Detroit Rockers in the fledgling National Professional Soccer League (NPSL).

Keith was a random signing in an era when 'foreign' signings were rare and few and far between. I found his background fascinating - UK-born and with local links but had played almost all his career in the States - in the pre-internet days and with it being after the period of the original NASL (in the 1970s), very little was known about 1980's 'American Football' - well the 'proper' sort at least. He had a ridiculous scoring record in the astro-turfed, mysterious leagues of America and scored a wonderful waltzing goal vs. Huddersfield Town in a 6-1 thumping of the West Yorkshire side, before disappearing as quickly as he arrived and returning back to the US; it was brief but he made quite an impression!
