Striker Baird began his career at Southampton but the Yorkshire lad failed to settle on the south coast and loan spells with Cardiff City and Newcastle United preceded a permanent switch to Leeds United. He had two spells at Elland Road, interrupted by a year at Portsmouth, and it was with Leeds that Baird built his reputation, his aggressive approach to the game delighting the natives. He played for Middlesbrough, Heart of Midlothian and Bristol City before joining Argyle in 1995.
Baird moved to Brighton & Hove Albion a year later and ended his professional career in Hong Kong with Instant-Dict. After returning to England he also played for non-league Salisbury City and Farnborough Town.
Having cut his managerial teeth, combined with playing for Instant-Dict, he also managed the national side in 1999 for the 2000 Asian Cup qualifiers. Baird however stalled slightly in his managerial development when he returned to the UK. He worked for a Leeds-based football agent for three years before setting up a contract hire and vehicle leasing company in 2003.
He did then return to part-time football management with a post at Havant & Waterlooville in November 2004. In October 2007 he was appointed manager at Conference South rivals Eastleigh. After five years in charge, he was dismissed in September 2012 before then being appointed Head Coach at Sutton United in October 2014.
