Dwyer began his career in his native Ireland with the Stella Maris club in his hometown of Dublin, before moving on to Belfast side Ormeau, where he was spotted by Wolverhampton Wanderers. He spent five years at Molineux, progressing to the fringes of the first team squad, but could not gain a regular place between the posts. Moving on to West Ham United, he played regularly over the next 18 months and then joined Swansea Town, a move which saw him produce the best form of his career. He played 140 games over the next five years and won 14 caps for the Republic of Ireland before joining Argyle. An unpredictable goalkeeper, he was popular with manager Malcolm Allison, but not so much with the club directors. When he was left out of a game at their insistence it caused a rift with the manager which is thought to have led to his departure. Dwyer left Home Park a few months later and ended his career with a brief spell at Charlton Athletic.
