Striker Austin was born in Isleworth, then in Middlesex, but now in the current day London Borough of Hounslow, in West London.
He came through the junior ranks at Crystal Palace but failed to make a first team appearance, and moved to Ipswich Town in 1974 where he was to spend three years, making 19 appearances and scoring once.
Austin then moved to Argyle, under Tony Waiters, as a makeweight, along with John Peddelty, as part of Paul Mariner's transfer to Ipswich Town. He would go on to score 20 goals in two seasons with the Greens and also played under Mike Kelly and Lennie Lawrence at Home Park.
After just over eighteen months at Home Park, he was transferred to Walsall in March 1978, where he scored 19 goals in 47 appearances between 1978 and 1979.
From the Midlands, he moved to Mansfield Town, for the most prolific spell of his career, scoring 31 goals in 84 appearances. In December 1980 he moved again to Huddersfield Town, where he played for three years, playing 42 times and scoring 10 goals. He was then sold to Doncaster Rovers in September 1982, playing 35 times and scoring five goals in the 1982-83 season.
His last move was to Northampton Town in August 1983 where he played 43 times and scored 10 goals and finished his professional playing career. He then wound down his career in the United Counties League in 1984, with a spell with Lincolnshire-based side, Stamford.
He returned to the Mansfield area once his playing days were over, and became a financial advisor. After moving into semi-retirement, he split his time between Mansfield and a second home in Gran Canaria.
