A young Plymothian fullback given his first team debut by David Kemp, Cross spent just two years as a professional at Home Park before being packed off to the opposite end of the country. He featured in the do-or-die final-day 3-1 defeat to Blackburn Rovers in 1991-92, but by then his confidence was in tatters after taking regular ear-bashings from new player-manager Peter Shilton – a man with exceptionally high standards that Cross could not meet. The then 19-year-old was offered as a makeweight in the deal that brought Paul Dalton to Home Park, and thus became a Hartlepool United player in June 1992. After two seasons and 50 appearances for Pool, he spent three years at Bury before joining Irish side Sligo Rovers and subsequently disappearing off the radar.
