Carter was a Warrington-born Bolton Wanderers winger who signed for Argyle in August 1982. Making his first start for Wanderers in the top flight at the age of 19, he went on to clock up 54 appearances in the top two divisions, scoring eight goals. Whilst at Burnden Park, he enjoyed loan spells with Mansfield Town in 1978-79 and also at Swindon Town three years later.
He spent the majority of the 1982-83 season in Green, making his debut in a 3-2 defeat at Reading in September 1982. His only Argyle goal came in a 3-2 home win against Cardiff City a few days after Christmas and he played his last game at home to Chesterfield three months later. Moving on to Hereford United, initially on loan, he made 97 appearances for The Bulls over the following four years, scoring 11 times, before two seasons at Wrexham and then a move to non-league football with Colne Dynamos in 1989.
