The Sheffield-born 6'3" striker, a product of the Sheffield United academy, made his Football League debut for the Blades as a late substitute in October 2010, soon after his 18th birthday, and within a few weeks signed his first professional contract.
Showing great potential, Slew made 13 more appearances for United over the following nine months and won two England under-19 international caps, which alerted the top clubs. He was eventually snapped up by Premier League Blackburn Rovers on transfer deadline day in August 2011 for a reported fee of £1.1 million.
However, that early promise wasn't fulfilled. In nearly four years at Ewood Park, Slew made just two brief substitute appearances for Rovers, one being a memorable 3-2 win at Manchester United. However, he was given five loan opportunities whilst with Blackburn; at Stevenage, Oldham (where he suffered a stress fracture in his back), Rotherham, Ross County and Port Vale.
His greatest success as a loanee was whilst with manager Derek Adams at Ross County, where he made 20 Scottish Premier League appearances in the second half of the 2013-14 season, often alongside future Argyle teammates Graham Carey and Yann Songo'o. He scored only one goal in his time at Victoria Park, in the final match, but made an impact with his pace and strength.
Slew's contract with Blackburn was cancelled by mutual consent midway through the 2014-15 season, after which he joined League 2 Cambridge United on an 18-month deal. After 25 games and one goal, including an appearance at Home Park in February 2015, his Abbey Stadium contract was cancelled by mutual consent at the beginning of February 2016 and he ended the campaign with League 1 Chesterfield alongside former Home Park favourite Sylvan Ebanks-Blake.
In June 2016 Slew joined up with Derek Adams for the second time in their careers, becoming the sixth of nine newcomers to Home Park in less than a fortnight. He featured regularly in Argyle's promotion campaign, scoring six goals, including a wonderful solo effort at Mansfield Town in the FA Cup, but was also red-carded for 'simulation' in a 2-1 defeat at Morecambe.
Slew was released in May 2017 as Derek Adams built a team for the new League One season. He had trials at several clubs during the summer before joining League One side Rochdale on a short-term deal in September 2017. A year later he joined Boston United and then Ashton United before he was handed the chance to resurrect his Football League career; in January 2020 the 27-year-old joined up with Adams for the third time, on this occasion at Morecambe.
