CRAIG SUTHERLAND
Note: There is some confusion about the goal scored at Bradford City on 10th December, 2011. The official decision was that it was scored by Craig Sutherland, so we have allocated it to him, but some records say it was Simon Walton (and the TV coverage shows that Walton had a strong case).
Full Name: Craig Stephen Sutherland
Born: 17 December 1988
Came from: Blackpool Went to: Blackpool
First game: 19 November 2011 Last game: 28 January 2012
Appearances: 9 (5/4) Goals: 1
Sutherland joined Argyle on a two-month loan from Blackpool in November 2011. He began his career with George Watson's College in his hometown of Edinburgh, before moving to the United States on a soccer scholarship. He spent two years with the Mustangs at Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas, before completing his collegiate career with two years playing for the Wolfpack of North Carolina State University in Raleigh, North Carolina.
A pacy striker, Sutherland sent DVDs of his performances to a number of clubs in England and Scotland and had trials with several teams, including Reading, Dumbarton and St Mirren, before being offered a contract by Blackpool after impressing in a pre-season friendly. He made his debut for the Seasiders as a substitute against Hull City in August 2011, and his first start followed six days later, against Sheffield Wednesday in the Carling Cup.
Sutherland failed to impress in a struggling Argyle side. As explained in the note at the top of this page, he is often credited with a goal in his nine appearances for the club, but this is disputed, having merely been stood on the goal-line when Simon Walton drove home an equaliser at Valley Parade in a match against Bradford City. TV replays suggested that if Sutherland did get a touch it was not obviously apparent, but most record books now reflect the initially stated Press Association attribution to him, which is unlikely to ever be corrected. Sutherland himself admitted at the time to both Walton the media that he did not get a touch.
After returning to his parent club, he spent time briefly with Woking before returning to Scotland to continue his career. Initially he had a trial at Dundee but issues with registration prevented him from signing and he moved to League Two club Queen's Park (4 games, no goals) until the end of the 2013–14 season before moving in July 2014 to then Championship club Cowdenbeath (12 games, 1 goal). In January 2015, he joined Stenhousemuir (7 games, 1 goal), signing a contract until the end of the 2014–15 season before being released by the club. He then signed for East Fife in July 2015.
