Peterlin began his career playing collegiate soccer in his native California, at first with the University of California Santa Cruz and then at California Polytechnic State University. During the college off-season he had spells with San Francisco Seals and Ventura County Fusion, both in the USL Premier Development League.
Fusion coach Graham Smith, a former Cambridge United goalkeeper, recommended Peterlin to Everton manager David Moyes and following a successful trial he moved to Goodison Park on a one-year deal. He could not force his way into the first team reckoning however, his appearances limited to just eight reserve team games, and was released at the end of the 2009-10 season. Peterlin was offered a trial by Peter Reid and impressed enough during pre-season to earn a one-year contract at Home Park.
His dual citizenship in the USA and Denmark, thanks to his Danish mother, meant that Argyle did not have to apply for a work permit. After starting the campaign in the first team, Peterlin soon found himself out of favour and his appearances towards the end of the season were more related to the size of the depleted Home Park squad than to form. With the club in administration, Peterlin was released at the end of the season, but in July 2011 he agreed a 12-month deal with Walsall, where he played 31 times in his only season with the club. In the summer of 2012 he had trials with Heart of Midlothian, Vancouver Whitecaps and at Paul Sturrock's Southend United before joining Danish 2nd Division East club Hellerup IK in February 2013, and by 2015 had moved across Copenhagen to rivals Boldklubben af 1893 in the same division.
